Video poker hand rankings

Individual cards are ranked A (high), K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 (low). Aces can appear low when part of an A 2 3 4 5 straight or straight flush.

Royal Flush

A royal flush is ten through ace of the same suit. In many video poker games, a royal flush triggers the jackpot and is the highest available combination.

poker hands

A hand always consists of five cards. In games where more than five cards are available to each player, the best five card combination of those cards plays.

Hands are ranked first by category, then by individual card ranks: even the lowest qualifying hand in a certain category defeats all hands in all lower categories. The smallest two pair hand (2 diamonds 2 clubs 3 hearts 3 clubs 4 spades), for example, defeats all hands with just one pair or high card.

Straight Flush

poker hands

A straight flush is a poker hand which contains five cards in sequence, all of the same suit, such as Q hearts J hearts 10 hearts 9 hearts 8 hearts. Two such hands are compared by their highest card; since suits have no relative value, two otherwise identical straight flushes tie (so 10 hearts 9 hearts 8 hearts 7 hearts 6 hearts ties with 10 clubs 9 clubs 8 clubs 7 clubs 6 clubs). Aces can play low in straights and straight flushes: 5 clubs 4 clubs 3 clubs 2 clubs A clubs is a 5 high straight flush, also known as a "steel wheel". An ace high straight flush such as A clubs K clubs Q clubs J clubs 10 clubs is known as a royal flush, and is the highest ranking standard poker hand.

Four of a kind

poker hands

Four of a kind is a poker hand such as 9 hearts 9 clubs 9 spades 9 diamonds J clubs, that has four cards of one rank, and an unmatched card of another rank.Ranking above a full house and below a straight flush and higher ranking four of a kind win over lower ranking ones.

Full House

poker hands

A full house is a hand such as 3 hearts 3 clubs 3 spades 6 hearts 6 diamonds that has three matching cards of one rank, and two matching cards of another rank. Ranking below a four of a kind and above a flush, between two full houses, the one with the higher ranking set of three wins, so 7 hearts 7 clubs 7 spades 4 hearts 4 clubs defeats 6 spades 6 hearts 6 diamonds A clubs A hearts. If two hands have the same set of three the hand with the higher pair wins.

Flush

poker hands

A flush is a poker hand that has five cards of the same suit, not in rank sequence like 5 diamonds cards not in any particular order. It ranks above a straight and below a full house. Two flushes are compared as if they were high card hands; the highest ranking card of each is compared to determine the winner. If both hands have the same highest card, then the second highest ranking card is compared, and so on until a winning card is found.

Straight

poker hands

A straight is a poker hand such as Q hearts J clubs 10 diamonds 9 spades 8 hearts, which contains five cards of sequential rank but in more than one suit. It ranks above three of a kind and below a flush. A game with two straights are ranked by comparing the highest card of each. Two straights with the same high card are the same value, suits are not used to distinguish them A hand such as A hearts K clubs Q diamonds J spades 10 clubs is an ace high straight ,also known as Broadway, and ranks above a king high straight such as K hearts Q spades J hearts 10 clubs 9 spades. The ace may also be played as a low card in a five high straight such as 5 diamonds 4 spades 3 clubs 2 hearts A spades, which is colloquially known as a wheel. The ace can't "wrap around", or play both high and low , for example 3 2 A K Q is not a straight, just an ace high high card.

poker hands

If two hands contain threes of a kind of the same value, possible in games with wild cards or community cards, the kickers , cards rounding out the hand are used so in tie with a 5 trip , and one player has a king and the other a duece the player with the king wins.

poker hands

A poker hand such as J hearts J spades 4 diamonds 4 clubs 9 hearts, which contains two cards of the same rank, plus two cards of another rank , plus one unmatched card, is called two pair. It ranks above one pair and below three of a kind. To rank two hands both containing two pair, the higher ranking pair of each is first compared, and the higher pair wins . The same principles hold true for higher card values winning over lower and kickers giving an edge in the event of a tie.
